CLAT — Pattern & Syllabus

The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is the national-level entrance for UG and PG law programmes at 22 National Law Universities — among the best 5-year integrated law schools (BA-LLB, BBA-LLB, BCom-LLB) after Class 12. Conducted by the Consortium of National Law Universities, it tests comprehension and reasoning aptitude rather than prior legal knowledge.

Syllabus

English Language

Passages of about 450 words from fiction, non-fiction, science, business and social sciences — readable by a Class 12 student in 5–7 minutes. Questions test understanding of main ideas, claims and opinions; drawing inferences and conclusions; summarising; comparing arguments; and the meaning of words and phrases in context.

Current Affairs & General Knowledge

Passages of about 450 words from news and journalistic sources. Questions test awareness of contemporary events from India and the world, arts and culture, international affairs and historically significant events — no prior legal knowledge required beyond the passage.

Legal Reasoning

Passages of around 450 words on factual legal situations, public-policy questions or moral-philosophical enquiries. No prior knowledge of law is needed — awareness of contemporary legal and moral issues helps apply the given rules and principles to fact situations and track how rule changes alter outcomes.

Logical Reasoning

Short passages of about 300 words testing argument structure — premises and conclusions; critical analysis of reasoning; deriving conclusions from evidence; inferences, analogies, contradictions and equivalence; and judging argument effectiveness and validity.

Quantitative Techniques

Short data sets — facts, graphs, pictorial or diagrammatic numerical information — followed by questions applying Class 10 mathematics (ratios, basic algebra, mensuration). Read widely, follow the news, and drill speed with accuracy using Class 10 maths material.

CLAT Eligibility

No upper age limit for the UG programme. Minimum 45% in 10+2 (or equivalent) for Unreserved / OBC / SAP categories and 40% for SC / ST candidates.
